Visa income requirement vs monthly budget

A visa income bar and a monthly budget answer different questions. Keep them separate before choosing a country.

Start with the visa evidence

Choose a specific visa route, not just a country. Find the official checklist for your situation and where you will apply.

Record the required income type, evidence period and currency. Note whether the authority specifies gross income, net income or another calculation.

For example, Portugal’s remote-worker residence route requires evidence of income earned through employment or independent professional activity.

Article 31.º-A(1)(c) measures average monthly work income over the preceding three months. That is an earnings test, not a spending estimate.

This clause does not settle gross versus net income. Ask your responsible consulate how it interprets the rule and what evidence it accepts.

Our Portugal income requirement guide explains that route’s calculation. Its figures retain their own source-check date.

Do not assume a savings balance replaces qualifying income. Confirm whether your chosen route accepts savings and under what conditions.

Build a monthly spending plan separately

Choose a city and household size before estimating expenses. A countrywide average is only a starting point.

List rent, utilities, groceries, transport, communications and healthcare or insurance. Add school costs, dependants and continuing obligations at home where relevant.

Use current local quotes where possible. Record the date, currency and what each quote includes.

Check whether rent excludes utilities, whether insurance covers your needs, and whether a transport estimate matches your actual commute.

Keep uncertain costs visible rather than treating them as zero. Build a range when you do not yet know the answer.

Your spending plan should use money actually available to your household. Documented qualifying income may differ from what remains after taxes and obligations.

Keep moving costs outside the monthly total

A workable recurring budget can still leave you short before arrival. Prepare a separate list of upfront costs.

Include travel, temporary accommodation, deposits, document preparation and application costs where applicable. Obtain current quotes rather than copying another person’s total.

Record when each payment is due. A refundable deposit still ties up cash while you cannot use it for other expenses.

Keep a separate contingency amount for delays or changing plans. Choose it for your circumstances; this guide does not prescribe a universal reserve.

A worksheet you can use today

  • Visa evidence: route, official source, check date, accepted income, evidence period and unresolved questions.
  • Monthly spending: city, household, expense categories, dated quotes and uncertain items.
  • Moving reserve: upfront costs, payment dates, deposits and contingency cash.

Compare income evidence with the visa’s income bar using the authority’s rules. Compare available household money with expected spending separately.

Do not subtract rent from a visa threshold unless the official rule explicitly tells you to. Do not compare different currencies without documenting conversion.

If income evidence falls short, lower living costs do not solve that evidence problem. Consider another route that genuinely matches your circumstances.

If the spending plan falls short, investigate another city, household arrangement or country. Visa eligibility alone does not solve a cash shortfall.

Passing both checks still does not establish full eligibility. Documents, family requirements and other conditions need their own official confirmation.
